So the other morning I went for a walk. It was kind of early, but it was warm, and the sun was shining. It was nice. I picked up a crappy coffee at 7-11, and then picked up my Nomad (iPods unattractive neighbor), scrolled through, and found The Magic Numbers. Seemed like a good choice at the time. And I was right. They're a great band, but kind of like Stars used to be, where people would be a little hesistant to admit to liking them, like they were everyone's guilty pleasure or something. (Well.. actually, I've only met one other person who has admitted to liking them, and he was pretty upfront about it).

Anyways, long preamble for a short song.

So, apparently the powers that be don't like people posting leaked tracks. Or so I'm led to believe since the file was pulled by YouSendIt.
So instead of posting more new Thom Yorke today, I'll post some old Thom Yorke. Probably my favorite track off of Hail to the Theief, Wolf at The Door, which is also somewhat appropriate in the context of the metaphorical "Wolf" (The Man) being at the metaphorical "Door" of this blog. And I'll give it to you live. Only because when I saw them live, the weird 40 year old standing beside me was singing along to this song in a trance like state.

Would You Like to Hear A Secret?

Because I have one... and it is soooooo good to hear it.

First some preamble:
Over the last few years, for major works (ie. Radiohead and Broken Social Scene records), I've been able to resist the urge to download leaked copies, instead anxiously awaiting release day until I could firmly hold a CD in my hand, put it in my stereo, sit back, and listen to the record in it's full uncompressed glory, as it was meant to be.
But no more. You see, this gentleman, Thom Yorke, perhaps you've head of him, is putting out a record on July 11. It's called The Eraser, and will be released by XL records. And it broke my willpower. And now it will break yours. And it's my little way of getting back at Radiohead for touring nowhere near Alberta this time around.

It's glorious, is it not? It reminds me of Pyramid Song, but with a beat. Maybe if you check back tomorrow there will be another song waiting. Who knows.

Well... It's finally here... the long-awaited, hardly anticipated top 25 of 2005, which will probably resemble most other lists. Good albums are just good albums. However, I'm not going to post mp3s with them, since that would take forever. Sorry.So here we go...
And the writeups aren’t going to be terribly insightful either. I’m lazy. (And the album covers will be up eventually…)

#25:Common - BeKanye West - Late RegistrationYes. I know. I'm grouping them together since they're both rap albums. And both produced by Kanye. I don't really love either album as a whole, but if you took the good parts of both, and put them together, you'd have a great album. That's the thinking here.

Amazingly, this is only the second best album containing ‘Wolf’ of the year. I bet those companies that make the T-Shirts with shadowy wolves and sell them in Banff are going raking it in due to the increased popularity.

There’s nothing left to say about this album. Except that it’s officially cracked my top 5 of all-time. And that I managed to snare the vinyl that still has Superman on it. That was pretty cool.

Arcades, Fire, and Corruption

So... in the continuing series (not really.. more coincidence than anything) of cover songs, coupled with Blog titles that end up being an incredibly lame attempt to combine the two elements of the cover song, I give you this:

The Arcade Fire - Age of Consent

Now here's the thing about this song. It saddens me. Why? Well, when I saw Arcade Fire in the giant toilet bowl that is Red's West Edmonton Mall, giant pillars surrounding me, unable to see the stage as they broke out with "Wake Up", kind of missing it because I was still jockeying for position amongst the masses, they played this song.
Talking to other people who had gone to the show the day after, I would comment "The New Order cover was pretty good, hey?", and I just got blank stares back. They didn't even know.

But, its still a good song.

The AF also played this on a New York City sidewalk awhile ago, with 5 or 6 other songs late/early one night/morning. The only thing that comes close to that in Edmonton is:
a) Push-up Dougie
b) The time three incredibly white guys walked by me, all in Team Canada track suits, one of them beat boxing, the other two trying to freestyle
c) Push-Up Dougie

Why do I live here again?

(Actually, in all seriousness, Edmonton has a wicked local scene (Faunts, Fields to Flood, Field + Stream, The Floor, Storyboard, Mark Templeton... others that I feel I'm forgetting). I just hate Red's and even thinking about it makes me boil over with passive-agressive barbs this city.)

OK. I know this has been floating around for awhile. But I hadn't heard it until today. But it's golden. It's....

Ted Leo covering Kelly Clarkson. It's funny how stripping down a song to just an acoustic instead of overproduced pop-punk guitar that sounds much like it came out of some sort of can, or other prepackaging container, can make such a difference.
Either that or how much difference someone with indie cred like Ted Leo instead of Kelly Clarkson can make... Not that people, especially people with mp3 blogs, buy into that stuff though. Not at all.
For good measure he tosses Maps in there too. For good measure.

I can't explain that last post. A travesty, it was. A slap in the face of this site's credibility. So I will make up for posting the worst rap song in the history of ever, by posting what was probably my favorite rap song of the year (Narrowly beating out the "Diamonds are Forever" remix, despite the fact that it has the best line Jay-Z has ever spat... (I'm not a businessman... I'm a business, man). Genius. Except for the fact that I can't take myself seryusly when I type 'spat'.)

Anyways.. 'What's the song?', you ask.

Common feat. Kanye West - The Food

Just downright catchy. But not in a bad way. It usually takes quite a bit for me to like rap, but this does the trick. Most of the stuff on Late Registration, didn't, by the way. But that's just me. I feel the need to compare all things rap to Late Registration since Kanye West is apparently the new Mozart, Martin Luther King Jr., and Muhammad Ali, all rolled into one. Or something.

Plus, on this track, you get to hear Dave Chapelle before he went crazy.

A Very Devastatin' Christmas

It's Devastatin' Dave (The Turntable Slave)! Except now he apparently goes by the Cyberslave. I'm not entirely sure what that means. He doesn't look like a robot or anything. Was 'cyber' even a word when this album came out?
Frankly, I'm surprised that a rapper who seems to be so socially-conscious (and, judging by that get-up, not at all self-conscious), would have a name with such negative connotations in the first place.

Either way. This is a rap that makes Mr. T and his verses from 'Be Somebody or Be Somebody's Fool' sound like Nas. Seryusly.

A Very Pedro Christmas

Well, I've missed a day or two. Maybe just one. Who cares.

Anyways, to make it up for you, I've got two songs today. Both Pedro the Lion. And both Christmas Carols. Or Christmas songs. I'm not sure if there's a difference between the two. Can I get a ruling on this?

Anyways, they're both from David Bazan's yearly Christmas EP, which you can purchase from Insound. This year's features God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and Silent Night. But it's only on vinyl. Hey, you know who likes vinyl? I do! So buy it for me. In case you didn't catch the subtle hint there.

Sun Kil Mouse

For the most part. I loved the 'Tiny Cities' album at first, but the novelty's worn off a little. But, still well worth a listen, despite the fact that Pitchfork hated it. So now everyone hates it. Bunch of zombies, you are.

(And, yes, I know on the other, now dead and/or dying site, I said how good this album was, even going as far as to say that the cover of 'Neverending Math Equation' made the original obsolete. But then you go back to the original, with it's being all over the place.. and... freaking Modest Mouse. Hopefully they get back to form after Good News. Which most people liked. It's alright. But it's got nothing on their older stuff. Nothing! (Moon/Antarctica, I'm looking in your general direction).)

Ah.. the good ol' parenthesised parenthesis. You know it's a good, coherent, blog when....

It's late. And the fact that baseball's winter meetings are always in line with studying for Finals sucks. But not as much as the fact that Playoffs are always lined up with midterms. There is no justice.

I'm listening to it now for the first time. The drums aren't as robotic as usual. Not sure if that's good or bad. It's definetly no 12:51. Incredibly underrated song. Julian doesn't sound as distorted either. It's OK, I guess. Worth a listen, anyways.
Just got to the bridge. What a stupid bridge.

Oddly enough, there's a lot more happening in this than in more Strokes songs, but its more boring.
But, judge for yourself.
They have made it to album #3 though, which I doubt many saw coming. 'It' bands. One of the strangest pop-culture phenomenons since... Will it Float?. Letterman rules.

Awhile ago my good friend Rob told me to listen to Fennesz. So I did. And now I telling you people to listen to it. Paying it Forward, so to speak. Kevin Spacey would be so proud of me.
If you haven't heard him before, it's usually just ambient stuff. Which is great. But this song in particular has words. Melody. You know... That stuff. Which makes it alot easier to put on here instead of one of the other tracks which you pretty much need to take in with the whole album.

I'm just gonna go right out and say it:
Dream pop rules. There's pretty much no denying it.
So here's the best dream pop band you've never heard of:
Art of Fighting

How nobody knows about these Aussie's is one of life's great mysteries. (Here's where lots of other people would put down lame life mysteries to accompany it... Maybe even pull out the "Why isn't the whole plane made of the Black Box?" business. But then nobody would ever read past "...whole plane" since they realize if they go further they'll die of stupid. So I'll just leave it as is.)

I'm really not sure how many bands I could call dream pop though. AoF and A Northern Chorus are the only two that consistently come to mind. I know there's others out there, and I know I know them, but I can never think of any others.

Anyways. Art of Fighting's first album, Wires, is much better than they're second, Second Storey. But I'm gonna post a song from the latter:

Although that would be hilarious. (Not that I think American Idol contestants are amazing, but you know what I'm trying to say. Hopefully.)

So.. anyone look at the day today? That's right. It's Novemeber 25th. Which means it's almost Christmas. One month, to be exact.

Did you know that Sufjan has put out not 1, not 2.. but 3 Christmas albums! That's right. Just don't tell Boyz II Men. They might plan a reunion. Hey. Remember that episode of Fresh Prince where Boyz II Men sang Silent Night on Christmas Eve? Because Will grew up with them in Philly? I'm secretly holding out for Sufjan to show up on some sitcom. Although Arrested Development is the only one worthy of him, and I just don't see that happening. Sadly...

A Better Day

Confession time. It took me a long time, and a show to get used to the new Broken Social Scene. Minus a few tracks (notably Windsurfing Nation and Swimmers. Probably because I'm not Emily Haines' biggest fan), I pretty much love it. One of the main things that bugged me was the production (which, apparently, is a pretty en vogue thing to bug you about the album). But I got used to it.

The point of all that preamble, you ask? Ibi Dreams of Pavement is freaking fantastic. But, if you're still on the overproduction bandwagon, here's an acoustic version of it:

Was blessed enough to see a great performance by Great Lake Swimmers last night. Just a small, low-key show. No backing band, just frontman Tony Dekker and an acoustic guitar. The highlight?

Just a great song.
And Edmonton's local scene continues to own all with Field + Stream providing a great opening set.
